Persimmons

Something new

There are many foods that are new to me here.  It is fun to enjoy a new flavor or taste of food, drink, etc.  These past few months I have enjoyed the fruit, “Persimmons”.  A seasonal fruit not seen abundantly in the U.S.  There are two kinds available, the “Fuyu”, a lighter orangish-yellow squat shape, or “Hachiya”, darker orange and more oblong-shaped fruit.

When certain fruits or vegetables come “in season”, there is a lot of talk about them and some excitement about their arrival. This is a fruit that is most associated with late Fall to the end of the year.  Some have fairly large seeds inside. The Hachiya is usually eaten when quite ripe however I am told that neither kind taste good when not at a specific level of ripeness.

I thought it was a little bland, it definitely has a flavor of its own.  You see this fruit hanging on trees in all the neighborhoods, sometimes only one or two left behind.  As the weather gets colder the color stands out against the background of the leafless tree limbs.
